Industrial IoT, or IIoT, is in its infancy compared to the potential offered by today’s sensor, networking, and analytic technologies. One of the hot topics discussed in most of the industrial categories is the idea of predictive maintenance. Predictive maintenance is a concept of using technology to determine when in-service equipment needs to be serviced prior to experiencing a failure. Most maintenance routines are scheduled on a time-based calendar. Unfortunately, faults and failures rarely follow such schedules. Predictive maintenance provides sensors to monitor key equipment parameters such as temperature, speed, vibration, power consumption, etc. Based on sensor feedback, a machine algorithm can help determine when maintenance should be performed. This technology helps limit equipment downtime and can help prevent unexpected damaging failures.
Although many of the usage scenarios listed below are just now being conceived, let’s explore how IoT technology can modernize the deployment of several industrial applications.
